“The lullaby is the spell whereby the mother attempts to transform herself back from an ogre to a saint.” –James Fenton
An ogre? Oh dear…
With that in mind, I recently put together a playlist of my take on modern lullabies, and thought that I would share it here. It might not put the baby boy to sleep, but at least we’ll have something familiar to sway to while we’re awake.
I called the list, (somewhat optimistically, I’ll admit) “He Sleeps”:
- Today: Joshua Radin
- Hot August Evening: The Biscuit Burners
- The Only Living Boy In New York: Simon & Garfunkel
- Half Acre: Hem
- Love Me: John Pringle
- Saturday Sun: Nick Drake
- You’re the One I Want: Chris and Thomas
- Song Bird: Eva Cassidy
- Blades Of Grass: Birdlips
- Ecstasy: The Barrel House Mamas
- Blue Sky Blues: Ryan Adams
- Why Worry: Emmylou Harris & Mark Knopfler
- Can’t Go Back Now: The Weepies
- Waiting On an Angel: Ben Harper
- Godspeed (Sweet Dreams): Dixie Chicks
